Goals of The Science of Phenomics Working Group

The goal of the working group is to establish Phenomics as a scientific discipline. Over the last decade, a number of people transitioned from their original disciplines of training to a type of scientist that develops and/or applies phenotyping and phenomics tools within the plant sciences at large. However, these tools allow for basic scientific questions beyond disciplines that use phenotyping and phenomics tools. We consider disciplines such as plant breeding, molecular biology, agriculture, agronomy, ecology and physiology as applied users of phenotyping methodology.

As an initial proposition, we suggest phenomics to be a discipline within the Natural Sciences that defines itself as the discovery and study of natural phenomena arising from the application of in-depth knowledge of the inner workings of technology, physics, engineering, mathematics & computer sciences.

Description of WG’s aims

  1. Defining the core scientific questions of the discipline
  2. Forming the identity of the phenomisist
  3. Developing educational concepts to train phenomisits
